Lifetime Achievement Award

Professor Elroy Dimson

Until relatively recently, the asset management sector lacked a high quality global database of asset prices, to help facilitate increased understanding in the way in which financial markets function as well as providing a basis for better investment management outcomes.

Thanks to the efforts of the winner of the lifetime achievement Award winner, along with his colleagues at the London Business School and the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, the asset management sector now has a global database that encapsulates more than 120 years.

Twenty five years ago Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton of the London Business School published the first results of what has turned out to be an immense project.

This provided accurate and comprehensive data on securities prices in 10 major markets.

Thereafter they expanded the scope and content of their database on an annual basis publishing their results and analysis in a series of annual yearbooks initially sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, then Credit Suisse, and latterly by UBS.

For the general reader they also produced Triumph of the Optimists: 101 Years of Global Investment Returns, a book published in 2002 by Princetown University Press.

Within Triumph’s pages an investor could find inter alia definitive information on inflation-adjusted returns for stocks versus bonds bonds and Treasury bills, real dividends, correlations between the 16 markets covered, the equity-risk premium and the relative performance of value and growth stocks.

Triumph of the Optimists covered 16 markets. The latest edition of Global investment Returns covers 35 country markets and five composite indexes. Data for 23 countries and all five composite indexes starts from 1900 to provide the most comprehensive set of securities data imaginable.

In addition, he is a co-designer of the FTSE 100 index, researched and published extensively in the field of endowment management and financial market history as well as teaching many students, some of whom are well-known in the wealth management sector, at the London Business School and the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge where is director of research (finance) and chairman of the Centre of Endowment Asset Management.

He has also acted as a consultant to many organisations and firms such as the strategy council for Norway’s sovereign wealth fund as well as the policy and advisory boards of FTSE Russell.
